Welcome to Down East Hospice Volunteers

Down East Hospice Volunteers is an all-volunteer non-profit program licensed by the state of Maine serving residents of Washington County. The mission of DEHV is to develop and maintain a volunteer hospice program based on the hospice philosophy.

Through this program, DEHV's purpose is to provide support for persons facing death so they may live the remaining days of their lives as fully as illness will allow. Cost-free compassionate care and companionship are provided to the terminally ill, their families, and caregivers by the hospice volunteers.

Down East Hospice also provides bereavement support to families and others touched by the death of a loved one. DEHV provides programs and workshops free of charge to the community.  Additionally, Down East Hospice networks with support agencies and organizations.

Down East Hospice is able to continue the work of serving its residents because of public support, grants, donations, and fundraising events. The organization does not receive any federal or state funding.

What is Hospice?

Hospice is a team approach to care that addresses the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs of dying patients, their families, and caregivers.

Hospice emphasizes concern for the quality of remaining life with the goal of making people feel more cared for and less alone.

Unlike medical hospice, a hospice client does not need to have a prognosis of six months or less to live. DEHV can receive direct referrals from a doctor, physician assistant, nurse practitioner, family member, friend, or the patient themselves.

We are always here to answer your questions.
