Volunteer Training

Becoming a hospice volunteer is a rewarding experience.

The following is what you will need prior to the training classes:

  • You will be provided or can download a volunteer application.

  • Barbara Barnett, the director, will conduct a short pre-training interview.

  • A background check will be done for all volunteers at completion of the five day training  

  • Fee of $56 with a sliding scale, if needed. Please feel free to inquire.

  • A private vehicle is mandatory to be a volunteer.

  • Eight hours of continuing education every year per Maine state guidelines.


The five day class covers the following topics:

  • Introduction to Hospice

  • Advanced Directives

  • Alternative Pain Control

  • Ethical issues at the end of life

  • Family dynamics

  • Personal death awareness: Grief, Loss, Transition

  • Spirituality

  • Stress Management

  • Dementia/Alzheimer's
